Gender pay gap 'needs tackling'
More must be done to close the pay gap between men and women, a gender equality campaign group has said.

The Fawcett Society makes its call on the first day of the Wimbledon tennis championships, which will be the first in its history to pay the tournament winners equally.

Dr Katherine Rake of the Fawcett Society said: "Women tennis players are finally enjoying equal pay at Wimbledon - it's time for Gordon Brown giving all women a sporting chance and finally end the pay gap."

It says Gordon Brown must introduce compulsory pay audits for all organisations, encourage both men and women to engage in work-life balance exercises and name a target date for the pay gap to be permanently closed.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics released last November, women working full time earned 17 per cent per hour than men while part-time women earned 38 per cent less than their male counterparts.

Last year the government's women in work commission reported that the UK disparity between male and female workers is the worst in Europe.
