FTSE 100 up on end of worst ever year
The FTSE 100 was up this morning as its ends its worst ever year.

The index continued its post-Christmas gains standing at 4,430.61 – a rise of 37.93 points or 0.86 per cent – at 8:35 GMT.

Leading the gains this morning was Liberty International – rising 3.83 per cent after recent knocks.

Group 4 Securicor gained 3.27 per cent, Cobham rose 2.74 per cent, Standard Chartered climbed 2.52 per cent and Drax gained 2.51 per cent.

Schroders Non-Voting continued its volatility falling 14.35 per cent, Aviva dropped 3.74 per cent and Vedanta Resources slipped 2.05 per cent.

Last night in New York the Dow Jones was up 2.17 per cent, while the Nikkei was up 1.28 per cent and the Hang Seng gained 1.07 per cent.

On the currency markets, the pound was at $1.445 and €1.025.
