FTSE 100 starts 2009 with rise
The FTSE 100 started 2009 with some small gains – continued the post-Christmas positivity.

At 8:42 GMT, the index stood at 4,452.19 – a rise of 18.02 points or 0.41 per cent.

Vedanta Resources was up 5.72 per cent, Liberty International rose 4.03 per cent, Carnival gained 3.51 per cent and Smiths Group gained 3.33 per cent.

Heading the losses was First Group down 4.21 per cent.

TUI Travel dropped 2.14 per cent, pharma giants GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca fell 1.99 per cent and 1.85 per cent respectively, while G4S lost 1.85 per cent.

Overnight in Asia, the Hang Seng was up 4.55 per cent, while the Nikkei rose 1.28 per cent.

In Europe this morning the Dax was up 1.25 per cent and the Cac 40 rose 0.84 per cent.
