The FTSE 100 stood down 0.06 per cent at 9:24 BST after making up initial losses.
The index stood at 5474.00 after initial drops fuelled by a 1.93 per cent fall on Wall Street for the Dow Jones last night.
Early trading saw a mixed bag of gains, led by builders merchant Wolseley which was up 4.74 per cent.
British Airways rose 3.63 per cent, ITV gained 3.48 per cent, Carnival was up 2.76 per cent and BG Group climbed 2.44 per cent.
British American Tobacco led the fallers, dropping 3.46 per cent to 1811p.
Cairn Energy dropped 2.86 per cent while the trio of miners Ferrexpo, Vedanta Resources, and Antofagasta all fell 2.7 per cent.
Sterling this morning was up 0.22 per cent against the euro and down 0.80 per cent against the dollar.
