FTSE 100 jumps 2.4% after Christmas
London opened surprisingly up this morning, as markets shook back to life after Christmas.

At 8:43 GMT, the FTSE 100 was up 2.40 per cent – or 101.35 points – to 4,317.94.

Commodity stocks pushed the market forward, but South African insurer Old Mutual led the gains, up 6.40 per cent.

Rio Tinto rose 6.18 per cent, Anglo American climbed 5.42 per cent and Royal Dutch Shell A was up 4.95 per cent.

Legal & General rose 5.11 per cent.

Standard Life was down 3.22 per cent, while property giants Hammerson and Liberty International were up 2.51 per cent and 2.20 per cent respectively.

AMEC rose 2.15 per cent and Friends Provident rose 1.90 per cent.

Overnight in Asia, the Hang Seng rose 1.02 per cent and the Nikkei was up 0.09 per cent.

In Europe, the Cac 40 was up 1.63 per cent, while the Dax gained 1.58 per cent.
