The FTSE 100 jumped on opening this morning, before falling and holding steady at its opening price.
At 9:46 BST the index was down 0.01 per cent to 4,282.42 a drop of 0.25 points.
This morning there was a broad range of winners and losers with HBOS leading the gains up 10.27 per cent to 87p.
Aviva rose 7.10 per cent to 328.25p, 3i Group was up 6.83 per cent, Wolseley gained 4.84 per cent and Schroders rose 4.76 per cent.
Royal Bank of Scotland fell 5.56 per cent to 79.80p, while Standard Chartered and Standard Life were down 4.96 per cent and 4.36 per cent respectively.
HSBC Holdings was down 4.17 per cent and Autonomy Corp dropped 3.55 per cent.
The initial London burst was fueled by last night's action in New York. The Dow closed up 4.67 per cent after hints from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke that more interest rates may be coming in the US.
No shares saw a drop in price on the Wall Street index, with oil firms taking the lion's share of gains.
Asia, however, was a mixed picture. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong was down 2.22 per cent, but Tokyo's Nikkei rose 3.34 per cent and Sydney's index was up 3.73 per cent.
Europe also saw jumps this morning with the Dax up 1.17 per cent and the Cac 40 rising 2.67 per cent.
