The FTSE 100 was up again this morning, for a second day of gains after the Christmas break.
At 9:15 GMT, the London index stood at 4,355.64 a rise of 36.29 points or 0.84 per cent after yesterday's near two per cent gain.
Last night in New York, the Dow Jones was down 0.37 per cent to 8,483.93, while in Asia the Hang Seng dropped 0.65 per cent and the Nikkei was up 1.28 per cent.
In Europe this morning the Dax was up 1.62 per cent and the Cac 40 rose 1.58 per cent.
The biggest gains of morning trading went to Eurasian, rising 2.94 per cent.
AMEC rose 2.82 per cent, Carnival was up 2.69 per cent and BAE Systems saw a 2.61 per cent rise.
Meanwhile. HBOS saw the biggest losses, dropping 4.25 per cent.
Power generator Drax was down 4.16 per cent, Lloyds TSB fell 2.97 per cent and property specialist Liberty International fell 2.55 per cent.
On the currency markets, the pound fell further overnight, pushing sterling towards parity with the euro.
