Top executives feel that British companies are being "paralysed" by ineffective middle management, a new survey shows.
The survey from Hay Group found that more than a third of executives felt that bad middle management was impacting on firms, costing them billions of pounds per year in lost productivity.
Two in five executives felt so strongly about the situation that they said that the middle management in their organisation was the biggest barrier to achieving company objectives.
Given the right training and development, however, executives say that middle managers could be up to 29 per cent more productive, Personnel Today reports.
Report author Giles Walker said: "Our research reveals an alarming performance gap at middle management level.
"With the impending retirement of the baby-boom generation, developing middle managers into tomorrow's leaders is a business-critical challenge for the UK's senior management."
