Expert: Employee training should be the focus of the year
03-01-2008
Bosses should be focusing on employee training this year, one expert has claimed.
Speaking to Personnel Today, John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, remarked that companies should be equipping their staff with skills during 2008.
Mr Denham commented that he would help to make this change in organisations.
"In the coming year, I look forward to working with employers and providers to bring about the culture change we need to ensure this partnership works to its full potential," he said.
Referring to Lord Leitch's proposals of equipping the UK workforce with a high skills set by 2020, Mr Denham acknowledged that action needed to happen now.
He added that companies should "forge closer partnerships with further and higher education providers" to help improve the skills possessed by the nation's labour pool.
In fact, Richard Lambert, the director general of the Confederation of British Industry, recently stated that businesses believe foreign nationals are more skilled than homegrown graduates.
