Experience more important than exams for IT recruiters

Employers are placing more importance on experience than qualifications when it comes to recruiting IT staff, a new report has revealed.
As many as 72 per cent of the HR managers questioned by Vanson Bourne for IT services firm FDM said that they preferred work experience to qualifications when looking for new staff.
This was despite 38 per cent of them believing that candidates usually need basic technology training once they are employed, as they often lack basic programming and technical skills.
Around 83 per cent of HR managers also felt that new recruits needed extra training in skills such as communication, management and general business awareness before they met the standards needed.
"Work experience is now seen as more important than actual qualifications by employers, meaning many courses still are not providing students with the skills they need," said Julian Divett of FDM, reports onrec.com.
"There seems to be a real gap between learning on paper and actually implementing these skills in real life scenarios. And UK businesses are currently left to pick up the pieces, either by providing training in-house or using external agencies."
