The engineering industry needs to do more to attract young people to the industry, one expert has said.
Lord Sainsbury, former parliamentary under secretary of state for science and innovation, told an Institution of Chemical Engineers reception that more should be done by influential figures in science and industry to encourage graduates to enter the sector, Labnews.co.uk reports.
"We need to inspire more young people to take up careers in the process industries and it will be the passion and enthusiasm of today's chemical engineers and science teachers that most inspire the next generation," he said, according to the news source.
The success of the industry is crucial for the economy, he added.
Lord Sainsbury stated that process, biochemical and chemical engineering are "part of the new knowledge economy".
These comments follow a similar statement by Keith Gallagher of Roevin reported in Personnel Today. Mr Roevin told the engineering industry to work together to solve the skills shortage rather than blaming each other.
