The narrowing of the UK skills gap through the training of young people must be supported by employers.
Skills minister Phil Hope told personneltoday.com: "It's a huge challenge for all of us to provide good quality training and a major part of this is getting employers engaged in the process."
"We would very much like to know [employers'] views and what routes of training they can offer to young people."
The government's education initiative has been outlined in a green paper, which supports the provision of training or education for all young people up to the age of 18 as of 2013.
Director-general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Richard Lambert was pleased by the propositions, calling them a "necessary step".
Commenting on the new system, Mr Hope outlined the ways in which training and qualifications will be made available.
"Essentially, there will be three main routes for young people to train: a diploma, an apprenticeship scheme or the conventional route of A-levels and university."
