Reports suggest that many employers in the UK are largely unimpressed with IT degrees and the general calibre of IT graduates, sparking concern over skills requirements in the IT sector.
Research conducted by e-skills UK ICT has found that most employers are failing to be impressed by IT degrees, while only half believe the level of achievement in an IT degree to be of any major importance.
Overall, nearly 60 per cent of employers state that an ICT-related degree is not particularly important for new entrants in IT jobs. It has also been found that less than 40 per cent of professionals who have earned a degree studied IT-related subjects.
Rick Firth of IT services company Parity explains how employers demand specialist IT skills as opposed to a general degree.
"The demand for some specialist IT skills has never been greater, with salaries on the increase in some skills areas so vocational qualifications are as popular as ever," he stated.
e-skills UK recently launched a new IT professional competency model intended to simplify skills development.
