There is a growing shortage of skilled IT workers within the public sector, according to a specialist recruitment firm.
Greythorn IT has warned that although government backed projects aimed at increasing the number of IT workers were successful - including the NHS National Programme for IT - there has been a migration of skilled staff from the public sector into the better paid private sector.
The departure of so many IT specialists may well be a result of the recent growth of IT in commerce and industry.
Mark Verghese, director of Greythorn, commented: "Some of the very largest projects have attracted extremely talented IT specialists from the private sector, because of their high profile and the technical challenges involved.
"However, the bad publicity about overspends has meant that there is now increasing pressure from the government to keep project costs down and that's likely to mean less interesting work and reduced rates of pay, which in turn will make the whole arena less attractive to the best people."
