Employers are 'worried about celebrating Christmas'
27-12-2007
Employers are nervous about causing offence by celebrating Christmas in the workplace, it has been suggested.
According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission, some bosses have not put up festive decorations this year as they are nervous about the reaction it could cause.
Speaking at a conference earlier in the month, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission Trevor Phillips assured employers that it is fine to celebrate.
"A lot of these stories about Christmas are the usual silly season stuff. But I can't help feeling there's sometimes an underlying agenda to use this great holiday to fuel community tension," he said.
He remarked that it is time to "stop being daft" about having fun during the festive season.
The general secretary of the Hindu Council UK, Anil Bhanot, added that Hindus celebrate Christmas as well as Christians.
Recent research by Clydesdale Bank discovered that as many as one in ten businesspeople made a commitment to work on Christmas day.
