Companies should make sure they are being honest with their employees as it will increase the chances of there being a trustful relationship, it has been suggested.
If there is clear communication between employers and their workforces it can show that they care and also increase team spirit in the economic downturn, Monster believes.
Companies should also consider helping workers to find another job if they have to be made redundant, Monster further advises.
Corinne Mills, HR advisor at Monster, said bosses "can never promise somebody a job, you can never guarantee that somebody's going to be safe" but they can help people to think "yes, its a difficult time, but they will be straight with me".
This is likely to encourage them to continue working hard and performing well.
According to the autumn 2008 Labour Market Outlook by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, 26 per cent of firms plan to make more redundancies over the next year.
