Employees 'prepared to take wage cuts' to keep jobs
05-03-2009
Many workers are increasingly prepared to give up more in order to keep their job, meaning that employers now have more power, it has been claimed.
Recent research conducted by Ceridian has discovered that half of workers would be prepared to work longer hours to protect their job.
A further 44 per cent claim they would accept an increase in workload while one in three put in extra hours of their own accord, Management-issues reports.
The website suggests that as a result of this, while managers were previously "tip-toeing around their workers and doing all they could to keep them sweet", they now have more influence.
Also established by the research was that a tenth of employees would be willing to take a pay cut and one in ten would accept a demotion to retain their position.
A report published by the American Journal of Epidemiology recently suggested that working long hours could be damaging to an employee's long-term health.
