New technology now means that it is easier for employers to carry out background checks on workers and new recruits, it has been suggested.
According to data quality and screening company Datanomic, large volumes of data can now be checked by computers meaning it is easier to monitor staff and suppliers.
This is due to sophisticated data preparation and technology that can deal with translations as well as spelling mistakes and typing errors.
Simon Pearson, director of client screening for Datanomic said technology allows companies to search through "tens of millions of rows of customer data or name data" which they can triangulate "against the terrorist databases and against the government's functions watch lists".
Datanomic adds that until now employee screening was largely only used in the financial services industry, where it is mandatory, and the legal sector.
