EDF Energy is to cut its prices by 10.2 per cent for gas customers on standard tariffs from June 15th.

Although electricity prices will remain the same, dual fuel customers will see a reduction of more than £63 per year.

Today's announcement comes after energy watchdog Ofgem publicly urged customers at EDF and Scottish Power to find another supplier due to excessively high tariffs.

But French-owned EDF insisted today that its customers will receive the cheapest dual fuel tariff in any region of the UK through the extension of the 15 per cent discount on the Energy Assist product until March 31st 2008.

Some 60,000 customers will save £137 a year as a consequence.

Vincent de Rivaz, the firm's chief executive, said: "EDF Energy listens very carefully to what our customers are telling us. That's why we have been winning customers each month for the last two years."

And EDF Energy's chief operating officer Eva Eisenschimmel added: "Going forward, we are offering some of the most competitive prices in the market combined with excellent service and first-class choice."

EDF Energy supplies gas and electricity to 5.5 million customers and employ nearly 13,000 people across the UK.

Last week, British Gas cut its gas and electricity prices for the second time in six weeks.

The Centrica-owned firm is to make a further six per cent cut in the cost of electricity and an additional three per cent cut in the price of gas.

The firm said the cuts will reduce bills by an average of £40, or £207 a year, for those who are signed up to receive gas and electricity services.
