There are now increasing numbers of jobseekers competing for each vacancy in the UK, new statistics have revealed.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has stated that there are now ten people per position a figure which has more than doubled since last year.
In 25 council areas across the country there are around 20 jobseekers for every available vacancy and in the Isle of Wight, this figure rises to 60 per job.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: "Rising unemployment has been matched by an equally shocking decline in job vacancies."
He also stated that "the government can no longer claim there is plenty of work available".
In other jobseeker news, a new report from Centre for Cities has revealed that many employers favour eastern European workers over Britons as they believe them to be more reliable and harder working.
