Drive to kick smoke habit boosts quit aid sales

24-08-2006

Smokers trying to give up the habit have helped boost the market for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) "at a phenomenal rate", a new study has claimed.

Researchers at Mintel estimate that the NRT market will be worth £97 million by the end of the year and will break the £100 million barrier in 2007.

"The increase in popularity of [NRT] products generally reflects the success of advertising campaigns, particularly those offering support programmes in addition to the actual products," commented Matt King, senior market analyst at Mintel.

"The availability of NRT on the NHS and the fact that more doctors are now advocating their use has also increased their popularity."

The rise in sales of aids to help smokers quit comes as pubs across the country either have smoking bans in place or are preparing for one.

However, only 13 per cent of respondents to the survey said that they would give up smoking if a wider ban was introduced.

Almost a third of smokers have tried to give up, with the nicotine patch used by 28 per cent of quitters, accounting for 87 per cent of the NRT market.

Yet sales of NRT tablets have risen by 62 per cent between 2001 and 2005 while the total cigarettes sold fell from 55.5 billion sticks to 49 billion in the same period.

Mintel expects the NRT market to continue to grow at a similar rate, rising by 46 per cent on current figures to £141 million by 2011.
