The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has announced a range of new proposals for changes to pay and conditions for teachers.
The proposals have been based on recommendations from the independent School Teachers' Review Body and are designed to try and attract the best new candidates to the sector.
Among the proposed changes are giving financial incentives for completing accredited qualifications in priority subjects, ensuring that progression on incremental pay scales follows a performance management review and using local flexibilities to reward teachers and address teacher shortages in priority subjects.
Education and skills secretary Alan Johnson said: "Teaching is both a challenging and rewarding job and it's right that we recognise this in the pay and conditions that we give them.
"We have increased pay by 18 per cent in real terms since 1997 to reflect this. It is vital that we continue to offer a competitive package in a strong economy."
