NHS staff who suffer abuse from patients will benefit from tougher action taken against the offenders, the government has said.
Speaking the Labour party conference in Bournemouth, health secretary Alan Johnson told his fellow MPs that tougher action will be taken against people who abuse NHS staff using a £97 million cash injection.
Mr Johnson commented that "too many [NHS staff] suffer harassment, intimidation and violence".
As part of the proposals outlined by the Mr Johnson, safety alarms will be provided to those who need them and better training will be given to help workers deal with aggressive behaviour.
The money will also help to pay for more prosecutions against those who have assaulted staff.
Furthermore, security weaknesses will also be identified as part of the plans.
The GMB recently approved changes to NHS pension schemes that will become effective in April 2008, claiming that the improvements will help aid retention and recruitment rates.
