Steel construction firm Corus may be reducing the salary of some workers by 10 per cent in an attempt to save jobs at the company.
The group is in talks with union leaders from Unite, Community and GMB about whether redundancies from its 25,000-strong workforce can be prevented.
Corus has banned any overtime working and some blast furnace plants, including those in Port Talbot and Scunthorpe, have been temporarily closed.
A spokesman from the union Community said: "Community has recently met with Corus management to discuss a response to the current economic situation.
"The negotiations are ongoing and it would be premature to speculate on the outcome. Nothing has been agreed at this time," he added.
Meanwhile, nuclear companies embarking on new projects have been advised by David Powell, the UK regional vice president of Westinghouse Electric, that recruitment agencies are a good way to find skilled construction workers, Recruiter reported.
