More administrative support in the NHS has been called for by the British Medical Association (BMA) following its latest survey of consultants.
The body found that 52 per cent of consultants believe they are restrained from innovating to improve patient care and 17 per cent added that they work for more than 55 hours a week.
Dr Jonathan Fielden, the chairman of the BMA's Consultants' Committee, suggested that NHS doctors could be increasing patient care time if they are given the right backing.
"The majority of senior doctors still lack very basic support, such as the right kind of IT or secretarial backing, which would release their talents and help them be even more effective for patients," he remarked.
Recently, the BMA estimated that if tuition fees increase any further than future medical students could graduate with debts of around £37,000.
