Consultancy and IT 'pay highest' grad starting salaries

IT and consultancy firms start graduates on the highest salaries, a new study has revealed.
According to a survey by Employment Review, university leavers can expect to start on an average of £23,487 and £23,167 in finance and IT roles respectively, Personnel Today reports.
This is above the average grad starting wage of £20,100, although those taking up a position at a private sector services firm should expect a median of £22,000.
However, the survey discovered that graduate wages are falling behind the growth of inflation, as average pay has only increased by three per cent over the past 12 months, which is 0.5 per cent behind the growth of average earnings of rest of the economy.
In fact, one in four companies surveyed admitted that graduate salaries had not risen at all over the past year.
Recent research from Legal Business revealed that young lawyers commanding hefty wage rises have no intention of staying with their legal firm for life, often moving to rival firms or taking up in-house positions with ex-clients, the Times reports.
