Construction industry skills shortage 'set to worsen'
There are not enough skilled workers in the construction sector, it has been suggested.

According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the industry is looking to open up a further 20,000 apprenticeships to address the skills shortage.

It is thought that the problem could worsen if migrant workers from countries such as Poland leave the UK.

This follows government figures released last month that showed an 18 per cent drop in the number of Polish workers arriving in the UK during the third quarter of 2007 compared to the previous year.

FMB director of external affairs Brian Berry stated: "The government under Gordon Brown has started to recognise the need to train more apprentices because there is evidence that migrant workers are returning to their country of origin."

Mr Berry added that the UK economy relies on foreign workers and that to remain competitive in the global economy a highly-skilled workforce needs to be created.
