Construction card lacks support

Low take-up a concern for agency. Recruitment firm Thorn Baker is urging agencies to ensure registered construction workers sign up to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) following warnings from several clients.

The CSCS card is an individual registration card showing that the holder is considered to be competent at his or her job.

It lists relevant certificates and shows that the holder has undergone health and safety training.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the scheme, with 700,000 workers already signed up.

But Thorn Baker director Paul Jackman fears some recruiters are failing to endorse or enforce it, while some even ignore it.

He said: Agencies are putting their workers futures at risk, not only because of health and safety issues but also because the card will soon become a mandatory requirement and those without it will find it hard to get work.
