Many city workers who are concerned about being made redundant due to the financial crisis are considering teaching as a reliable career move, it has been suggested.
The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) believes that the profession is seen as a safe option for City business workers and some who have already "made their money" now want to give something back.
Furthermore, there are courses available from the TDA which are encouraging people to consider teaching.
John Connolly, head of the organisation, said these courses "take people who have degrees in other subjects and send them to a six month science boot camp to get trained".
He also pointed out that this could be a "natural move" for some people as many of them are science graduates.
According to figures from the TDA, the number of trainee science teachers will reach 3,670 in 2008-2009, which exceeds the government's target by two per cent.
