Manchester is set to benefit from 2,700 new jobs after the city was named as the site for Britain's first super-casino.
The new 5,000-square metre Las Vegas style casino will contain up to 1,250 unlimited jackpot gaming machines and will be based in the east of the city, near to Manchester City Stadium.
The Casino Advisory Panel said that it had chosen the northern city, a decision which surprised many, after it met the "full range of requirements" for the project in its bid.
A report produced by the panel stated that despite massive regeneration in the city in recent years, Manchester was still the third most deprived local authority in England and would benefit from the economic boost of the casino and the extra jobs.
Nationwide chief economist Fionnuala Earley said that house prices in the city could also be affected, as new jobs would lead to an increased need for housing.
