Cameron in buy British call
David Cameron has claimed that the long-term interest of UK farming is "best served by British consumers demanding quality British produce".

Speaking at the Oxford Farming Conference this morning, the Conservative leader set out his thoughts on the future of farming in this country.

He argued that consumers want to buy British-produced foods and that it should be made easier for them to do so.

"A vital part of facilitating this shift in priorities is ensuring that this country has far more rigorous and transparent food labelling," he said.

"Today British consumers can find it difficult to back British farmers, because of inadequate labelling.

"Food can be imported to Britain, processed here, and subsequently labelled in a way that suggests it's genuinely British. That is completely wrong."

He added that Britain is experiencing a rise in what he termed "food patriotism" and expressed his desire to "stand up" to the European Union and ensure that people were able to purchase food which originates in the UK.

"The role of a government that cares about British farming is not to sit on its hands and say "there's nothing we can do", but instead to test these rules and if necessary challenge and change them," the Tory leader added.

"In any case, we will take a leaf out of the book of other EU members who have stood up more effectively for their local producers."

Environment secretary David Miliband also addressed the conference today, where he urged farmers to embrace the opportunities provided by the modern focus on climate change.

"Global warming creates problems - but it will also create new markets and new opportunities," he said.

"That doesn't mean it is a good thing; it does mean we need to make the most of it."

He highlighted the potential for farmers to begin producing alternative energy sources which can be used instead of fossil fuels and expressed his desire for the UK to become a leader in "green farming".

"My vision for farming in 2020 is positive, driven by economic, social and environmental goals," he added.

"I am determined government will play its part, and I am determined to work with you to make it happen. We can create opportunities. But it is up to you to grasp and shape them."
