More skilled workers are needed in the construction sector, a body in the industry has warned.
The Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians (Ucatt) has stated that more needs to be done to attract people to the construction industry.
A spokesperson for Ucatt noted that an "ageing workforce" is adding to the shortage of workers in the sector.
"There aren't sufficient construction workers to do the work that is needed and migrant workers are filling the gap," he remarked.
According to Ucatt, 80,000 new workers are required each year in the industry to meet construction targets.
However, only 7,500 apprenticeships went ahead in the sector over the course of last year, the spokesperson said.
Such a skills shortage is likely to impact upon the housing sector, he warned.
In other news today, the manufacturing sector is also suffering a skills crisis, a poll by Russam GMS has found.
