Calls for further increases in the minimum wage during 2008 have been made by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
General secretary of the TUC Brendan Barber commented that the minimum wage should rise to £6 over the next year.
He said that the British economy is strong and having enjoyed ten years of economic growth it can afford a wage hike.
"The minimum wage is making a real difference to the lives of many low paid workers," he remarked.
Mr Barber added that there should be a crackdown on those who do not observe the law.
"It's also vital that we get tough on those flouting the regulations - rogue employers who underpay the minimum wage deserve zero tolerance," he stated.
The TUC has also recently asked the government to pressure other EU member states to sign up to the EU Temporary Agency Directive to ensure the rights of temporary workers are protected.
