Call for Bank Holiday Fridays

Call for Bank Holiday Fridays
The UK economy may be better off if bank holidays were held on a Friday instead of a Monday, a study suggests.

A report from the Centre of Economic Performance (CPF) published today makes its proposal on the basis of research showing evidence of varied worker performance on different days of the week.

Unsurprisingly, Friday is the least productive day of the week while Tuesday is the most productive.

Businesses could take advantage of this change by altering the working times of their employees, the report suggests.

Its authors, Alex Bryson and John Forth, propose shifting bank holidays from Mondays to Fridays is one obvious way in which productivity could potentially be boosted.

They also suggest other initiatives for employers, like concentrating their workers' hours in the middle of the week, but recognise that such a move is fraught with counter-productive risks.

"It is widely accepted that flexible working arrangements may benefit workers seeking
to balance work and family commitments whilst helping employers match labour
supply to demand for their goods and services," the study concludes.

"Productivity gains may… be attainable if both employers and employees are encouraged to take a more creative approach to the question of work scheduling over the week and to engage in more active discussion about how work can be scheduled in ways that maximise output."
