Confectionery producer Cadbury has recalled several of its Easter-themed products after incorrectly labelling nut-free products.

Easter eggs, Mini Crème Eggs and Easter Chicks with Buttons are among the chocolates affected by the error, which saw the supposedly nut-free products processed on factory machinery which had previously been used for foodstuffs containing nuts.

Although insisting that most of the affected products had not yet been distributed into shops up and down the UK, Cadbury head of communications Tony Bilsborough told BBC News that his company was determined to publicise the mistake.

"However slight the risk may be we think it is important that do let people who have a nut allergy aware of the issue," he said.

"If you do suffer from a nut allergy we do want to urge people to call the helpline or log onto our website… just to check."

Last year Cadbury hit the headlines after traces of salmonella found their way into its products. The ensuing "manufacturing and facility rectification and remediation costs" amounted to £30 million, impacting upon the profits of parent company Cadbury Schweppes.
