The number of people working in the UK's business services sector is likely to increase to 4.9 million employees by 2010, meaning that one in six people will be working in the sector, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr).
The report states that employment in business services is expected to rise to 17.6 percent of total employment across the economy while the share of employees in the manufacturing sector is likely to be 11.3 per cent.
John Ward, one of the report's authors, said: "The business services sector is the UK's largest employer and biggest job creator.
"Between 2000 and 2006 employment in the sector is estimated to have grown by more than 529,000 - and our projections point to an additional 406,000 jobs by 2010."
The business services sector consists of real estate activities, IT services, legal activities, accounting and book-keeping, market-research and consultancy services, architectural and engineering activities and advertising.
Of these, the sharpest growth in the number of employees is predicted to be in the IT services sector with 70,200 new employees entering this specialism.
The report predicts real output growth in the business services sector to be 5.1 per cent in 2007. It also projects employment in the sector to grow by 3.1 percent in 2007.
