The government borrowed £19.1 billion in March, official figures have shown, the highest monthly amount since records began 16 years ago.
In his Budget announcement later today, chancellor Alistair Darling is expected to raise borrowing forecasts further, despite borrowing £90 billion in the last financial year.
That figure, itself a record, amounts to 6.19 per cent of GDP.
In his Pre-Budget Report in November, Mr Darling forecast £78 billion worth of borrowing, while in the previous financial year the total stood at £55 billion.
