BT has bought Europe's biggest marina Wi-Fi network operator in an effort to expand its wireless internet provision.
The telecoms firm announced that it had acquired Square Mile Marina Limited, paying £150,000.
BT, which last financial year reported pre-tax profits of £2,484 million, believes the purchase well help extend its reach.
It says it will now be able to deliver "high speed wireless internet (Wi-Fi) access to 39 coastal and inland marinas in the UK and Jersey".
On its website, Square Mile says it is the "exclusive supplier" of wireless broadband to "sailors within 50 of the UK's largest and most prestigious marinas".
"We are now the largest marina Wi-Fi operator in Europe currently servicing one million minutes of usage per month a figure that is increasing at a rate of 25 per cent per month subscribing up to 100 new users every day," it adds.
BT provides networked IT services; local, national and international telecommunications services; higher-value broadband and internet products and services and converged fixed/mobile products and services.
It has been locked in a battle with other telecommunications firms to provide customers will multiple packages including TV, phone use and internet provision in recent months.
Shares in BT went up by close to one per cent on the news of the acquisition, rising to 277.75p on morning trading.
