An increasing number of workers in the UK are considering seasonal jobs, it has been suggested.
According to vegetable supplier Thanet Earth, 214 out of 217 applicants for 30 new jobs were from the UK - an exceptionally high proportion in a sector that employs many workers from abroad.
Eventually, the hi-tech greenhouse project intends to employ 500 workers in both skilled and unskilled roles.
One factor behind the shift could be the impact of the recession on jobs in other industries, said Nicola Outlaw, director of the firm behind Thanet Earth's latest recruitment drive.
"Where last year they tended to shy away from temporary jobs, we are now getting good numbers applying," she added.
Vegetable supplier Fresca Group holds a 50 per cent stake in the £80 million Thanet Earth complex. The greenhouse contains enough glass to cover 80 football pitches.
