Many British managers are in their roles for "accidental" reasons and have no formal management training, an expert has claimed.
Head of public affairs at the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Petra Wilton said that Britain was experiencing a management crisis which had to be dealt with if Britain is to remain competitive.
Ms Wilton said that only one British manager in five has a Level 2 management-related qualification, Personnel Today reports.
She said: "There are lots of accidental managers in the UK who have been given a promotion due to their professional skills but have no formal management training."
Poorly-qualified managers tended to bring down the level of competence and inspiration within firms, Ms Wilton said, and CMI research had shown that organisations that invest in management performance get better results.
