BP to launch root-and-branch review

Oil giant BP is set to launch a root and branch examination of its global operations in the wake of last year's Texas City refinery blast, which left 15 people dead, according to media reports.

The Financial Times newspaper claims that John Mogford, vice-president of safety and operations, is to lead the review, which is likely to take five to ten years to complete.

A BP spokesman confirmed the review will take place but said the review was "evolutionary" rather than "revolutionary".

Mr Mogford's team will include 45 staff and 45 auditors.

Lord Browne, BP's chief executive, has described the Texas City blast as a "fault line" that compelled his firm to examine its entire operation.

The planned reforms will involve implementing standard procedures worldwide and unifying other operations.

Separately, Lord Browne could be forced to give sworn videotape evidence for civil cases linked to the Texas City explosion.

BP also faces criticism from investors for the recent disruptions to its Alaskan supply, caused by problems with the Prudhoe Bay pipeline.
