Bosses of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) prefer older employees because they work harder, according to new research out today.
Abbey, the financial services group, has found that 30 per cent of company bosses prefer workers in their 40s as they are apparently the hardest working age group.
This was followed by people in the 30s and finally 20s with 24 and 14 per cent respectively.
Managing Director of Abbey Business Ian Wilson comments that the research indicates the challenges businesses face when recruiting staff.
"People who run their own company often expect more from their staff as they have a huge vested interest in the success of the business," he remarks.
Mr Wilson added that the study indicated that people in their 30s and 40s are the most attractive candidates to SMEs.
However, the Graduate Recruitment Bureau state small firms can benefit from hiring university leavers as they can "bring the firm up to speed on what's going on".
