Offshore IT workers are being recalled to the UK by their employers in an attempt to try and save money, new findings reveal.
Three-quarters of IT directors said they would not be sending any more employees offshore to work in 2009, while a further six per cent said they would be recalling staff back to the UK, Contractor UK reported.
ReThink Recruitment, which conducted the survey, said although these numbers were fairly small they were "significant".
The economy in places like India is currently growing at around nine per cent a year and ReThink Recruitment director Michael Bennett believes many factors mean offshoring no longer has the same cost advantages.
"Spiralling wage inflation in offshore locations, combined with the project management cost of co-ordinating teams across international time zones, can eat into any cost savings," he said.
The Financial Times recently reported that many employers are also planning to reduce the number of agency staff they employ as the EU is planning to give temporary workers the same wage as permanent employees, a study by Eversheds found.
