T&G steps up transport pay campaign

T&G steps up transport pay campaign
The Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) has announced that it is to step up its campaign to improve pay for transport workers.

The union said that it would be launching a campaign in spring 2007 which will concentrate on bringing up pay for road transport workers across public transport, haulage, distribution and logistics.

London bus drivers staged a 24-hour strike on Monday in the first industrial action to take place on London buses for seven years and T&G national organiser for transport, Graham Stevenson, said that this was one of the first indications of the new strategy.

"London bus workers' pay is nowhere near the £40,000 plus that is needed to get a toe on the lowest rung of the capital's property ladder," he said.

"The T&G is preparing a major wages offensive for 2007 for all road transport workers. The London bus workers are in the vanguard of the campaign."

Lorry and van drivers will be the main focus for the next stage of the campaign in 2007.
