Mothercare has reported a below average sales rise for its UK stores in its latest trading update.
Releasing its third quarter trading statement to the stock market today, the baby products retailer reported a UK sales rise of 1.3 per cent for the 41 weeks to January 12th 2007, with like-for-like sales up 1.9 per cent.
The figures are well below a 31 per cent rise in international sales, which grew by 5.3 per cent in total.
"Mothercare delivered a resilient third quarter sales performance in what remained a volatile UK consumer environment," chief executive Ben Gorndon said.
"Direct in-home sales were up 22 per cent supported by successful launch in November of our new state of the art online platform, built by Amazon Services."
Mothercare's international business was driven by strong sales and 53 new store openings. The group has 319 stores in international markets, including ten stores in India and 18 stores in Russia.
