British Airways is set to change its baggage policy with customers paying up to £240 for an extra bag for a return flight.
Coming into force on February 13th passengers in economy class will only be allowed to put one piece of luggage in the hold, cancelling their previous policy of allowing more than one bag as long as passengers do not exceed the weight limit.
Those wanting to carry an extra bag will have to pay a £240 fee for a long-haul flight, £120 for short-haul flights such as those within Europe and £60 for domestic flights within the UK.
"For customers transferring flights, a single charge based on the longest flight will apply," the message on the airline's website said.
Customers travelling to and from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will still be allowed to check in two bags for free as these countries are covered by local government regulations.
BA says that the new baggage policy is aimed at streamlining the service at airports by creating a "single allowance system".
But some critics believe that BA will see a backlash from its passengers. The Daily Telegraph reported that sales staff will not be telling customers in advance about the charge.
"They will tell people if they ask about baggage policy. But it is on our website," BA told the newspaper.
