Average salary reaches £31,969
The average salary has risen in December to reach £31,969, new figures have indicated.

According to allthetopbananas.com, average pay cheques have increased by £679 since the last monthly salary index.

Surveying 875,560 jobs, the firm discovered that London companies pay their employees the highest amounts, with the average for the capital hitting £39,137.

Managing director of the site Dave Martin commented that although the end of this year has shown a clear trend in wage rises, next year could be different.

"The salary index has shown there is a definite trend of average advertised salaries increasing across much of the UK," he said.

"If, as some people predict, confidence in the UK economy cools in the first few months of 2008, it will be interesting to see how that affects advertised salaries."

Earlier this month, the Institute of Payroll Professionals discovered that many professionals do not discuss their pay packets with colleagues.
