Aslef calls off train strike

07-09-2006

Train drivers' union Aslef has called off strike action planned for tomorrow and Monday.

The union reached an agreement with South West Trains today, which means thousands of commuters will avoid major disruption.

A strike last month brought the network to a virtual standstill with around one in ten train services operating.

"Aslef has today told us that it has suspended the industrial action planned for Friday 8th and Monday 11th September," the train operator said in a statement on its website.

"We are delighted that we will now be able to offer passengers a normal service on these dates."

Aslef called the strike action as part of a long-running dispute over free taxis for drivers working antisocial hours.

The union has also raised concerns about safety, after South West Trains drafted in managers to drive some trains.

In a statement, Aslef said that an agreement had now been reached with the train company. "A mutual agreement has been reached on the issues that caused the industrial breakdown," the union said.

South West Trains operates more than 1,600 trains every weekday, serving 213 stations from its hub at London Waterloo.
