A challenge more important than salary for IT staff

Work regarded as challenging and rewarding is more important to most IT staff than a high salary, according to a new survey.
Computer Weekly and Computer People questioned almost 3,000 IT staff in Northern Ireland and found that 91 per cent said that challenging work was extremely or very important.
This was considerably higher than the 74 per cent that said the same about salary or job security.
In fact, IT workers regarded a challenge as so important to their jobs that they were prepared to leave firms that didn't offer one, with 60 per cent saying that they were keeping an eye on the jobs market.
Fourteen per cent were actively looking for a new job, meanwhile, and 17 per cent were expecting to change jobs within one to two years.
Half of those surveyed said that they left their last job due to poor career prospects, compared to 30 per cent who cited salary.
Global CTO at research firm Ipsos Ben Booth told Computer Weekly: "There are certain things in your business you can change and some you cannot. If your employer does not have that philosophy of developing staff, go and find somewhere that does."
