'Too much is expected' of graduates
Employers are expecting too much from graduate jobseekers, the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (Agcas) has warned.

Communications director for Agcas Elspeth Farrar remarked that companies can have "unrealistic expectations" of graduates who have just left university.

Her comments follow a survey from the Association of Graduate Recruiters, which revealed that 67 per cent of firms are expecting to struggle to fill all of their vacancies.

Ms Farrar noted that there could be a marked difference between what skills graduates actually possess and those which they are expected to have.

"It seems now that companies are expecting students to come out of university work-ready," she stated.

Graduate recruitment schemes were initially set up to help degree holders develop skills, Ms Farrar said.

Undergraduates are also under pressure to meet tight recruitment deadlines, although some may feel achieving a 2:1 or a first is more important.
